Dr Andrew Higgins

Dr Andrew Higgins is a veterinarian and a former Director of The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, UK. He has been involved with many charities and has a passionate commitment to animal welfare and improving the health and husbandry of domesticated animals. For 20 years he was Honorary Scientific Adviser to the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) and has an interest in medication and doping control in animals. For 25 years, Andrew Higgins was Editor of The Veterinary Journal and has served as a consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN. He has edited two textbooks, one on horses (The Equine Manual) and the other on camels (The Camel in Health and Disease), and also an amusing autobiographical book titled With the SAS and Other Animals about his time working as an army vet in Oman. He has been our Honorary Scientific Adviser since the beginning and makes regular visits to the Park. He is a firm believer in promoting elephant welfare through education and in the importance of transparency, and he helps in the selection and guidance of our Volunteers. Andrew Higgins is a trustee and Chair of the Southern Thailand Elephant Foundation (STEF).
